Chinese Brush Painting

Charlotte Fung Miller - April 1

April 1 - 30, 2026

Reverence for nature, serenity and peace is the Chinese philosophy that inspires the brush paintings of Charlotte Fung Miller of Mukwonago, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Miller is a native of San Francisco’s Chinatown. She studied 10 years of formal Chinese calligraphy and Chinese brush paintings under Master Lui Sang Wong after 10 years of Chinese school. Following this, she earned a Master’s degree in nutritional science and a bachelor’s degree in bacteriology at the University of California, Berkeley. She was employed in these fields while living in Madison in the 1970’s. In time, however, her love for painting overshadowed her biomedical career and painting gradually became her full-time profession.

The basic elements of Chinese brush painting are retained by Mrs. Miller. Painting is done with watercolor and rice paper. No shadowing or sketching are used, and depth is achieved only through the gradation of color. However, she adds her own individual style using color and the introduction of Midwest themes. She especially delights in the colors of Wisconsin’s changing seasons.

Mrs. Miller has exhibited in juried shows in Wisconsin, surrounding states, and now nationwide. She has had many one-woman art exhibits and has won numerous awards for her art. She has also taught courses in Chinese art and cooking, her philosophy being, “I will be able to share my heritage with others.”
